Groundwork Somerville and Fennick McCredie Team Up Again

Last Fall we rolled up our sleeves and dug in to help Groundwork Somerville harvest their crops and prep the urban farm for Winter. This year we are excited to work with them again to design and construct structures that will support the farm’s community outreach!

Groundwork is committed to “changing places and changing lives” through programs that address areas of healthy education, green jobs and sustainable communities. Our project supports this mission with components that include storage units for up to 20 bikes to be used by the organization’s Green Team, an environmental youth employment program that teaches job training and skill building. The newly acquired bike fleet will help the youth team travel to and from the group’s various sites around the City while learning about bike safety.

We are also designing a multi-functional shade canopy for 25-30 people. The structure will serve as a teaching space for community workshops and presentations, a break area for those working at the farm, and a gathering space for community events. The canopy’s roof is also a rainwater catchment system for crop irrigation, visibly demonstrating the organization’s commitment to sustainable environments.
