Private Residence

With a passion for modern design, historic Boston, art deco style, and their growing family, our clients envisioned their Marlborough Street home which embodies their unique mix of values and aspirations. Together we worked side-by-side through an intensive and exploratory design process to successfully integrate historic charm, modern elegance, and pragmatic family needs. Prior to demolition individual items of historic significance were painstakingly identified, removed, restored, and then re-incorporated into the modern design in new and unexpected ways.

A common challenge of the Boston rowhouse is the sense of separation one feels between the 6 floors of the home – especially problematic for a young and growing family.  This design provides new vertical connectivity across all 6 stories via interconnecting double-height spaces, balconies, and enlarged stair openings at selected locations. This spatial unification is further enhanced by the flood of natural light which now penetrates into all areas of the home. Further direct connection to the outdoors is achieved through sunken outdoor patios and at the uppermost floor, a large exterior patio, open to the sky above, and providing a welcoming connection to the rooftop patio and garden.
