Fitchburg Municipal Airport Administration Building
New Construction
The first 3 of 13 administration buildings to be designed and built under MassDOT’s Strategic Master Plan for Municipal Airports, this new building significantly upgrades the existing facilities at the airport. The final building design was based on a prototypical design developed by FM as part of an earlier master plan. The new facilities offer improved office space for airport staff, interior and exterior space for the public to engage with airport activities, quiet rooms for pilots, meeting rooms, and fit-out rental space.
While based on a prototype, the building is adapted to the specific needs of the airport and its community, both for its interior layout and its exterior expression. The corrugated metal façade is in keeping with the industrial character of the airport and the neighboring properties. The roof structure is Cross-Laminated Timber – previously not used in MA. The project was designed to be LEED certifiable.
