This project was envisioned as not only the pragmatic remedy to a critical parking shortage, but also as an opportunity to create a new sense of order, connectedness and identity to a campus of disparate terminal buildings. As the first phase of the Logan modernization program, the parking garage consolidates over 3,100 spaces into the core of the airport, and interconnects terminal destinations via an elevated pedestrian concourse at the west face of the garage, the primary approach to Logan.

Vertical facade elements, such as stair towers and the lantern-like, glass block enclosed helical ramp, are articulated as counterpoints to the predominantly horizontal expression of the parking deck structure.

Particular investment is made in traveler conveniences. Pedestrian movement is functionally separated, and architecturally distinct from vehicular flow. The sense of parking near to a terminal destination is created by the proximity of the enclosed, glass and stainless steel finished concourse, elevator lobbies and stairways. Spectacular, orienting views of the downtown Boston skyline are framed through the double height windows of the space, and an aquatic-terrazzo floor painting by artist Jane Goldman unifies the concourse and bridge connections to the air terminals.

Program
1,380,000 sq. ft. parking facility for 3,150 cars with a glass enclosed pedestrian concourse linking to Terminals A and E
