MBTA New Bedford Pedestrian Bridge
New Construction

FM worked with the MBTA and City of New Bedford hand-in-hand to design a landmark pedestrian bridge that fits into the City’s vision of a rejuvenated and vibrant waterfront area. Connecting Purchase Street across Route 18 to the corner of Whale’s Tooth Parking Lot on Acushnet Avenue, the network tied arch bridge is both beautiful and functional, incorporating an ADA-compliant design with twin elevators and bicycle-friendly stairs at the Acushnet Avenue landing.

The experience of a pedestrian crossing the bridge between the MBTA Rail Station and the neighborhoods around Purchase Street feels inviting, accessible, safe, and varied. Glass enclosed elevators as well as uniformly lit stairs and walkway enhance the sense of safety. On the bridge itself, a nautically inspired wooden handrail lines both sides of the walkway, creating a perch to view the city skyline and harbor. The transition from bridge span to sidewalk is animated by a stepped plaza with seating and landscape.
