MBTA Newton Stations
Station Design and Construction

For the Auburndale, West Newton, and Newtonville stations, FM, as architectural subconsultant to VHB, developed a Conceptual Design Study consisting of a feasibility assessment of upgrading the three existing MBTA Worcester Line commuter rail stations in Newton. Each station operates with single, low level platforms and requires upgrades to achieve full and fair accessibility and code compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (MAAB) requirements, as well as MBTA design guidelines. The study evaluated a No Build Alternative and three different Build Alternative solutions to improve accessibility and operational efficiency for the three Newton stations.

In 2018, Architectural and Engineering Services to improve these stations commenced, with VHB leading the project and FM providing architectural design. Services include the design of proposed station improvements, including fully accessible platforms, pedestrian accommodations, bicycle access, parking, safety and security, and wayfinding.
