Logan International Airport
Hangar Upgrades

While industrial in nature, the existing aircraft maintenance hangars at Boston Logan International Airport have become elegant beacons on the airfield. During the day, bold bands of color articulate the facades, while at night the buildings transform into containers of light. The renovation design enhanced aesthetic and functional quality, but also incorporated sustainable goals such as day lighting, use of durable recycled materials, and provided efficient MEP/FP systems and building envelope, which will substantially reduce energy consumption and add 20 more useful years to these buildings.

The project performed base building upgrades to two under-utilized aircraft maintenance hangars (buildings #8 and 9). These upgrades facilitate the tenant’s fit-out and subsequent use of the building as efficient, functional and attractive MRO hangar facilities. Upgrades include providing a 20-year useful life for the building with weather-tight building enclosure, a secure building exterior and adequate infrastructure for the minimum requirements of an eventual tenant MRO fit-out, secure SIDA access control and a code compliant base building.

Massport’s Sustainable Design Guidelines have been taken into account. The complete abatement of any hazardous materials within the building was required. The scope of work includes existing conditions verifications, development and analysis of rehabilitation alternatives, preliminary and final design, and construction phase services.
