Wells Station’s architecture uniquely features the use of a mass timber structure to benefit the new facility in several ways. As a renewable and regionally sourced material, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is a sustainable, low-carbon choice that reflects the station’s natural wooded context. CLT provides structure as well as creates interior warmth as a finish material. Panelized CLT is also efficient to construct which helps reduce impact to ongoing rail service. Expansive glazing enhances the traveler’s experience with abundant daylight and connection to the natural environment, framing views of approaching trains and station activity.

The project includes replacement of the existing boarding platform and addition of a second one, allowing passengers to board either a northbound train or a southbound train at the same time. A new overhead pedestrian bridge will connect the two platforms. We partnered with VHB to upgrade and expand Wells Station to accommodate more Amtrak Downeaster trains and passengers for the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA).
