Harvard University Office
Office Fitout

The renovation project undertaken by FM encompassed a comprehensive transformation of a 5,260 square foot interior office space. This initiative aimed to foster a modern, open, and collaborative work environment tailored for the needs of thirty-five employees of the University’s department. At the heart of this redesign was the adoption of an activity-based workplace design philosophy, which prioritizes space efficiency and flexibility. To this end, the project introduced a diverse array of workspaces, including open plan workstations that encourage interaction among team members, well-equipped meeting rooms for formal gatherings, a fully functional kitchen, designated breakout areas for informal collaboration, a resource lounge for relaxation and independent work, and a welcoming reception area to greet visitors. This strategic variety in workspace types ensured that every employee could find an environment conducive to their current task or mood, be it collaborative projects or focused individual work.

Incorporating health and wellness into the office design was a main component of the design, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of these factors in workplace satisfaction and productivity. The renovation placed a strong emphasis on maximizing natural daylighting and ensuring all workspaces benefitted from exterior views, thereby creating a more vibrant and energizing environment. Additionally, the choice of non-toxic materials and a focus on maintaining high air quality standards were critical in promoting a healthier, safer workplace. Such considerations not only enhance the physical well-being of employees but also contribute positively to their mental health and overall job satisfaction.

The culmination of this renovation project is a space that not only meets the practical needs of the University department’s workforce but also aligns with contemporary values surrounding work-life balance and environmental sustainability. The incorporation of health and wellness principles into the office design underscores a commitment to the well-being of employees. The result is a vibrant workplace that supports collaboration, innovation, and a high quality of life for all its employees, setting a new standard for office design in educational institutions.
