Fennick McCredie Project Awarded at 2018 Woodworks Symposium

We were proud to accept a Regional Excellence Wood Design Award for the State of Massachusetts Public-Use Airport Buildings Program at this year’s WoodWorks Design Symposium in Boston.

The Wood Design Awards recognize projects for their use of wood in buildings and commitment to excellence in sustainability, beauty, strength, design versatility, and cost effectiveness.

The program, which we developed in partnership with MassDOT Aeronautics Department, was designed to revitalize community airports across the state. Our prototypical building design expresses the identity of the Massachusetts General Aviation through representative wood architecture that will ultimately by deployed in seventeen towns. To date, 3 buildings have been completed in Mansfield, Beverly, and Fitchburg, and 3 more are currently in design or construction.

The combination of CLT and glulam beams is a distinct feature of the airport building prototype, and the buildings are among the first in Massachusetts to use these materials structurally. The use of a timber structure promotes sustainability – marrying durability with structural and visual considerations, while ensuring that these buildings will age well throughout their lifetime. The design is expected to benefit each airport location through lower heating costs in winter, resulting in an overall program of economically and environmentally-sustainable wood buildings.
